Some would agree a child learns more by what is seen than by what is heard. As you sit with that idea for a moment, try to consider the different ways in which you share your beliefs and values with your children. As Christians we are called to care for the least, the last, and the lost. Do you feel it’s important for your children to learn how to show compassion towards others? Are you feeling challenged as a parent living in a culture that tends to be self-focused rather than other-focused? In the time that God has given us to raise our children, it is neither too early nor too late to make a difference in the world by modeling love through actions. God has given us hearts and minds to love with and hands and feet to serve with. Here are a few ideas on ways you can instill compassion and service in the hearts of children of any age:
Pray for the needs of others with your children
As a parent or caregiver, you are your child’s primary influencer. When you pray for the needs of others alongside your children, they can begin to imagine life outside of themselves. Take time each day to pray together for family, friends, and neighbors. “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” – Romans 12:12
Volunteer with your children
There are numerous opportunities to serve others in the community whether through a local church or non-profit organization. When you model care and concern for others as a family, your children will learn how to show compassion for others in their own special way. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” – 1 Peter 4:10
Share Bible passages that talk about caring for others
Take time to share Scripture with your children through Bible study and devotion time. Jesus commands us to “love one another” by sharing His love with our neighbors both near and far. As we model care and compassion for others in our daily walk, our children will learn to do the same. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” – John 15:12
Encourage lifelong service through outreach and missions
When the time feels right, encourage your older children to experience an outreach weekend or a mission trip. This will allow your child to see the world beyond their backyard. Trust in the work that God is doing in them, and that God will use them to touch the lives of those in need. “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6
